Feature of the Month: Niagara Falls In Winter!

Niagara Falls In Winter 1909!
It was during a winter of intense severity that the ice hill shown in the view was formed. The base was composed of huge pieces of ice that, having broken loose in the river above the fall, were carried over and accumulated at the foot. The frozen spray being deposited upon these, rapidly increased the height of the mound, until it reached to more than half the height of the fall.

Winter in Niagara will take you breath away. Mist from the Falls coats the trees in Queen Victoria Park, wrapping them in sparkling coats of ice several inches thick. Glistening icicles hang from the wall of rocks that line the gorge and mounds of ice and snow completely cover large boulders at the base of the American Falls. Even if you don’t like the winter, it is a beautiful sight to see.

For years, ice bridges have formed in the Niagara Gorge winter after winter with few exceptions. They were caused by slush and ice flowing over the Falls. The ice became choked in the gorge and would freeze into a solid mass forming the world famous “ice bridge”.

Up until the year 1912, when three people were swept away when the ice bridge broke apart, the public was allowed to cross the river in winter on the ice that would form. For many years, it was the only way to cross the river in winter, until bridges were built across the Niagara Gorge. Thousands of people would gather on the ice bridge to see the awesome ice formations and to play on the “bridge”. One favorite activity was tobogganing down the ice mountains that would form at the American Falls.

Some winters the ice formations would be so enormous, the water and ice would cause extensive shoreline and property damage along the river to Niagara-on-the-Lake and the mouth of Lake Ontario. The Maid of the Mist boats and docks were damaged numerous times as well as the Ontario Power Generating Station.

Since 1964, an ice boom has been stretched across the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie. It has kept the ice buildup in Lake Erie from flowing into the lower gorge of the Niagara River causing an ice bridge. The ice bridge, although a spectacular sight, was much too destructive and most importantly, threatened to jam up and plug the Hydro Station water intakes.

Here are a few links to some picture postcards from the early 1900’s of the ice bridges that would form, and the Falls in winter:
